Following the transition of the late Aholu Menu Toyi I, the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has sent a clear message to the Badagry Royal Council: the process of choosing the next King must be free from external interference and manipulation. The Governor’s directive aims to preserve the peace and cultural heritage of the ancient city as it prepares for a new era of leadership. Representing the Governor during a formal condolence visit to the Akran’s Palace on Thursday, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Bolaji Robert, emphasised that the state expects a seamless transition. Addressing the Council of Chiefs and the Royal Family, the Commissioner stressed that the integrity of the succession process is non-negotiable.
"Badagry is one, and nothing must be allowed to divide the people," the Governor stated through his representative. "I am appealing to you to do the right thing and uphold the traditions of our ancestors."
The late #Akran, who transited on Monday, January 12, 2026, was widely respected for maintaining stability and unity throughout his reign. The Governor noted that the best way to honor the late monarch’s memory is to ensure that his successor emerges through a peaceful, transparent, and traditional process. The Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Hon. Babatunde #Hunpe, also echoed these sentiments, reassuring the community that the local administration would work closely with the state to maintain law and order during this sensitive period. Speaking for the family, Princess Adesola Akran-Oketunde, the eldest daughter of the late King, thanked the Lagos State Government for its support. She called for continued unity among all stakeholders to ensure her father’s vision for a prosperous Badagry remains intact.
